Self Image

I’ve been bombarded with the media’s version of the “ideal body” for as long as I can remember. From celebrities and role models that are constantly competing for the title of “thinnest,” to commercials for miracle diets and instant abs, people in the US are constantly being shown how they should look. This is especially true for girls.
I know from personal experience how much stress can be caused by the constant strive to be perfect. I am self conscious to an extreme. I go through phases of dieting and counting calories. Not exercising makes me feel guilty about every little thing I consume. And the sad part is, this is totally normal for most teens in the US. We are constantly being judged on how we look, whether it be by our peers or by ourselves.
I found it extremely strange to find that Russians do not share in my self consciousness. The beaches in Moscow and St. Petersburg were filled with people of every shape and size, all flaunting themselves without the slightest hint of embarrassment. I saw more speedos during my short stay in Russia than I have ever seen in my life. My one piece swimming suit was a rarity among tiny bikinis.
At first I was very judgmental. Did these people even look at themselves when they walked out the door? How in the world could they think they looked good? Why weren’t they hiding with shame behind their towels? Hell, I was embarrassed for them!
But after studying and contemplating for awhile, I came to the conclusion that they simply must not have the high standards that most American’s hold themselves to. They are comfortable in their skin, and they aren’t afraid to show themselves as they are. And for that, I applaud them! It seems that for Russian’s, self image is not an issue. And even though I found it strange at first, I now have a lot of respect for their ability to love their bodies regardless of how anyone else may look at them. I only wish I was that confident!

Your skin is something you wear everyday, everywhere….forever. A person who has learned to be “at home” there, has the greatest gift of all. Keep searching for yourself, Meagan. One day you will find yourself surprised to learn that you were there all along. Stop looking everywhere else and look within. Great blog! Enjoy London! I love you.
