A day at the beach – Moscow
Share This:
Who would have thought of going to the beach while in Moscow, but three things convinced us – the 100+ degree weather, how tired we were and a sign at the hostel that advertised trips to a nearby beach.
We talked to Dave at the hostel who runs the trips. Turns out that he hadn’t actually taken anyone yet, but wanted to go try out the trip with us.
We got to explore the Russian metro system, which is fast and efficient. We followed the directions given to Dave by the secretary of the hostel, but once we got off at our stop to catch a bus to the beach, there didn’t seem to be the right bus there. We asked a man for directions who looked at us in surprise and said, “Silver Lake, Jesus! I know how to get there, but not from here.” After backtracking a bit and another ride on the subway, we caught a bus and arrived at the lake.
There were many people there enjoying the beach. As you can see from the pictures, it is much like in the US. You can see some boys tossing each other in the air to do flips into the water…well, okay, some of the beach dress is a bit different. Meagan said that she had never seen so many Speedo’s. They had some paddle boats for rent and people were jet skiing (all out of our price range), but we had a great time just swimming, people watching, cooling off in the water, and enjoying the picnic lunch that we packed. I find that I am actually kind of relaxed these days and have a much better go with the flow attitude.
We gathered up our things and headed back to the hostel – a much quicker trip than when we were trying to find our way, and then shared a BBQ with some other folks at the hostel. A nice day!
You can see our pictures on Flickr and on this post page. It’s supposed to be 103 degrees tomorrow and today we did a history museum, so we may have to try to find a water park or similar activity to stay cool tomorrow!
