The London Eye

I’m not scared of many things, but my biggest fear is probably of heights.  I don’t like being high above the ground, no matter how “secure” I am.  It should make sense then that I am terrified of Ferris wheels.  I don’t mind roller coasters or merry-go-rounds or water slides, but Ferris wheels scare me to death.

The London Eye is a gigantic Ferris wheel in the heart of London that allows you to see the city from above.  It is so high up that you can see about 40km (that’s almost 25 miles) in any direction!  Sounds cool, but I wasn’t exactly thrilled when I found out that we would be experiencing this spectacular view first hand.

After buying the tickets, we watched the London Eye in 4D as a little preview to our 30 minute ride.  During the quick showing, that showed us what we could expect on the London Eye, we got bubbles blown at us and mist rose from the floor, so that the experience would seem more realistic. It was pretty cool, and was only a few minutes long.

After the showing, we went outside and waited in the rain to experience the London Eye firsthand.  The wait wasn’t too bad, and my fears began to ease as I saw how much more secure this Ferris wheel was in comparison to others.  It was very well built, and looked much safer than ones I had previously been on.

We finally boarded.  Instead of the seats most Ferris wheels have, where you are exposed to the elements and the possibility of falling out, the London Eye had completely enclosed glass bubbles, which fit about 20 people.   The fact that I couldn’t just fall out made me feel much more secure.  There were benches in the middle of the bubble for people to sit on.  I sat on these benches the majority of the ride because I felt safer.

To go around the entire Ferris wheel once takes 30 minutes.  I thought this would scare me even more (30 minutes is a long time to be on a Ferris wheel) but the I actually liked the slow pace.  And the view from the top was awesome! It would have been better if it wasn’t raining, but it was still really cool to be able to see so much of London!  We bought a map-like thing that pointed out main attractions you could see, depending on the direction you were facing.

Overall, the London Eye wasn’t that bad.  It was a nice view of London, and it wasn’t too scary as far as Ferris wheels go.  It was a good experience.
