What I Can Carry On My Back

You would think that going around the world for an entire year would require quite a packing list.  After all, a year is a long time! But for our trip, we’ve narrowed it down to what I consider to be the bare essentials.

I like clothes.  I like changing my outfit several times a day and not wearing the same thing very often. I like a variety of choices when it comes to my wardrobe.  I like looking put together!  What can I say, I’m a teenage girl.

Unfortunately, this trip requires me to be a minimalist for a year.  We’ve narrowed our packing list down to the smallest amount of clothes and such as possible.  Everything we take has to fit into our backpacks, which we are carrying ourselves.  Here’s a rough idea of what each of us is bringing:

  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 2 long pants
  • 4 short sleeve shirts
  • 2 long sleeve shirts
  • 1 pair of pajamas
  • 4 pairs of underwear
  • 2 bras
  • 4 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of good hiking shoes
  • 1 pair of good flip flops (I brought crocs instead)
  • 1 fleece
  • 1 rain jacket (my fleece and rain jacket are combined)
  • Medications
  • Swimming Suit
  • Toiletries (I’m bringing deodorant, mousse, cover up, and mascara)
  • Bathroom kit (soap, shampoo, towel, etc.)
  • Lap tops
  • Paperwork (passport, visas, international drivers license, vaccines, etc.)

Some other things I’m bringing that the others might not be are:

  • 2 paper journals and pens
  • Hat
  • Headband for my hair (it’s going to get pretty out of control)
  • Pictures of my family
  • iPod (with multiple ear phones in case they break)
  • Digital camera
  • Silk liner for sleeping
  • Rain cover for my back pack
  • A duffel in case I need to check my backpack for some reason (airlines cover items lost inside the baggage, but not the baggage itself.  The duffel makes it so my backpack is included in what is lost)

That is all we are bringing to last us a year.  We can drop and buy new stuff as we go, as well as buy clothing in places where a certain type of dress is required.  It looks like a lot when it’s all layed out.  But I’m sure it won’t seem like a lot when we’re gone.  Wearing the same things day in and day out… I am going to have a much better appreciation for all my possessions when I get home!

I keep trying to sneak a few extra things into my pack :-)

When you have your back pack on your back you will be glad you don’t have it to heavy.

Not to throw anyone into a tailspin but sunblock would be at the top of my list. It could certainly be used sparingly and shared by all but considering how much time you all will be in the outdoors…and how difficult it is to find sunblock in the places you will be visiting, it might be a worthy investment of space/weight. Or maybe you could have friends mail it to you in packages to destinations. THat might be better than dealing with airline carry-on restrictions.

Don’t fret too much about what you have to leave behind! Part of the joy of traveling is discovering interesting clothing, gadgets, etc. in the local markets.

Meagan I feel your pain when it comes to the hair situation! It sounds silly but that would probably be one of my biggest (hygienic) concerns on a day to day basis haha!

I thought you were completely bought in when I was trying to convince you of all the different looks with the layering techniques :-) blue or grey…blue with grey.!!! Ahh so many choices and I havent even added in “with” or “without” sock variations!

Seriously though. Recognizing that what you are carrying is more then many have…will probably make your “pre-travel” thoughts very different then your “post travel” thoughts.

It certainly doesn’t sound like very much, but then I wondered how you were able to fit all of that into just one backpack! I have a hard time packing for just a week! Write often in your journals..this is something you will always look back on.

Amy- I forgot to mention it but we do have sunblock packed! As well as insect repellent. Thanks for the concern though!
Mom- haha I guess when you put it that way I do have a lot of options… And I already know I have way more than most people in the world! This is my chance to go help a lot of those people have a better life! Haha but I am still going to miss my possessions to some extent

My dearest MEAGAN, I love the blog your mom left and your response to it. I’m very glad you thought of the bug repellant and sunscreen. As far as outfits go, you also have shoe options to go with the sock choices! Take care of your feet while you are gone. Did you pack a nail file and band-aids? You may want to invest in having your hair braided in cornrows at some point…..you must post pictures of your hair! “Meg’s Mane Meyhem”…You’re on my mind. The big departure day is just hours away! Journal, journal, journal! You are going to be learning so much about other cultures and yourself along the way. I love you so much.

Doesn’t seem like much for a year, but you have to carry it on your backs. Good luck. I will be following you! Wishing you and your family the best…
