50 people giving $10 each = Thanksgiving dinner for 720 children orphaned by AIDS!

100 people giving $20 each will buy them all shoes for Christmas – they usually receive no presents at all. Please pass this on and give these kids a reason to celebrate!

We are writing to you from a village in Kenya, run by a charity called Nyumbani, which cares for 720 children who have lost their parents to AIDS. We have been living in this incredible, sustainable community for almost a month. Nyumbani has put intelligent, creative initiatives in place, like a wood farm, and efficient, organic crop production that will render the community completely self-supporting by 2018. They already grow their own food and even make their own bricks to build their own homes and schools.

Would you please give $6 to make Thanksgiving possible for 10 orphans?

We want the children and the elders who care for them to have a Thanksgiving meal this year, with a meat stew and a tortilla-like food called chapati. It costs 64 cents per person – $525 in total. The children love having a meal other than rice and beans, but the village can only afford it four times a year. At Christmas, that meal is the only gift they receive. We want them to know the generosity of others this holiday season.

or give $12 to provide 4 children with shoes this holiday season?

These children have virtually nothing – just a few articles of clothing. Some do not have shoes to get through the rainy season, because theirs are too small or worn out. Some have only flip flops or they go barefoot. Canvas shoes similar to Keds cost a about $3 here and they would be most appreciated by the children. There total cost will be $2,200.

You will be able to see the results of your generosity on our website

We will post pictures and video of the Thanksgiving celebration on our website www.RTWwithUs.org, so if you are trying to teach your children about giving, and the way people live in other parts of the world, you will be able to show them a tangible example of the difference a bit of generosity can make. It will take time to raise enough money for the shoes and to order and receive them, so we will post those pictures near the end of December if we are successful in raising enough.

You can learn more about the village, the lives of the children who live here, their school day, and the Kenyan culture through videos, articles and pictures we have posted on this site. We’ve also posted about many other countries and projects so please explore.

Sustainability – we have raised $6,500 toward a $10,000 well

Some of you may not want to give to a meal that will be consumed or that don’t provide a long-term benefit to this community (other than to show them that others care for them). You may prefer to contribute to a well that will allow them to grow enough food to reach their goal of creating a sustainable community where 1,000 orphans and 100 elders can live in a way that is self-supporting. The children receive food, care and education, so that they may grow up productive members of society, rather than orphans left on the street to fend for themselves. The village also reaches out to the broader community and provides job and training in organic farming and efficient use of natural resources. Your contribution to the well will help an entire community for generations to come.
